The 1991-1996 Chevrolet Impala and Caprice are full-size sedans with long, heavy doors, and swinging those doors vertical changes the whole character of the car. This kit from Vertical Doors, Inc. converts both front doors to open up instead of out, using hinges made for this exact body. It fits every trim of the Impala and Caprice from 1991 through 1996.

The hinges bolt straight to the factory bolt pattern, so there is no cutting or welding, and the conversion is fully reversible if you ever want to return to stock doors. Everything is made in the USA from domestic hardened steel, and the design is patented. A step-by-step instruction manual ships in the box and free tech support is an email or phone call away, but we recommend having a professional installer do the work using those instructions. Getting full-size doors aligned and moving right is a job worth doing carefully.

The door first swings out on the vertical pin, then lifts on the round bearing hub, and the gas shock holds it up: the two-stage motion in VDI's patent (US 6,845,547). Each kit has right and left hinge assemblies, two gas shocks, M8 bolts with washers, shoulder bolts and pins (VDI install manuals); set screw #2 and nut #1 adjust where the door closes. A typical kit, drawn from VDI's Crossfire manual: the plate, arm, brackets, shock and angles differ by vehicle, and each kit is made for its car.
