An Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser is about the last car anyone expects to see with its doors pointed at the sky, which is half the appeal of converting one. This Vertical Doors Inc. kit lets the wagon’s factory doors swing up vertically, lambo style, and it fits every Custom Cruiser built from 1977 through 1990, all trim models included. The part number is VDCOLDCRU7790.

The box holds everything the conversion needs:

Two Vertical Doors Inc. hinges, one per side
Two gas shocks to raise and hold each door
All mounting hardware

The hinges are a direct bolt-on design that mounts to the wagon’s factory bolt pattern, and the whole setup is reversible, so the doors can go back to stock later. The hardware is made in the USA from domestic hardened steel and the design is patented here as well. Each kit ships with an instruction manual, and while a mechanically inclined owner with basic tools can handle the job, we recommend professional installation using those supplied instructions. The door first swings out on the vertical pin, then lifts on the round bearing hub, and the gas shock holds it up: the two-stage motion in VDI's patent (US 6,845,547). Each kit has right and left hinge assemblies, two gas shocks, M8 bolts with washers, shoulder bolts and pins (VDI install manuals); set screw #2 and nut #1 adjust where the door closes. A typical kit, drawn from VDI's Crossfire manual: the plate, arm, brackets, shock and angles differ by vehicle, and each kit is made for its car.
