This kit converts a Honda Prelude’s stock doors to vertical operation by replacing the factory hinges with a pair of Vertical Doors, Inc. lambo hinges. Part number VDCHP9702 is a direct bolt-on design: the new hinges mount to the Prelude’s factory bolt pattern, and the conversion is fully reversible, so the car can be returned to its original hinges later. VDI builds the hinges in the USA from domestic hardened steel, and the design is patented here as well.

  • 2 Vertical Doors, Inc. lambo door hinges, one for each side
  • 2 gas shocks to hold the doors in the raised position
  • All mounting hardware needed for the conversion

Fitment covers every trim level of the Prelude across the 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 model years. Each kit ships with a 6-12 page instruction manual, and VDI offers free tech support by phone, email or social media if questions come up mid-job. Door alignment still takes care to get right, though, so we recommend having the kit fitted by a professional installer working from the instructions supplied in the box. VDI has been building these conversions for over 20 years and can also point you to local, nationwide or mobile installers.

The door first swings out on the vertical pin, then lifts on the round bearing hub, and the gas shock holds it up: the two-stage motion in VDI's patent (US 6,845,547). Each kit has right and left hinge assemblies, two gas shocks, M8 bolts with washers, shoulder bolts and pins (VDI install manuals); set screw #2 and nut #1 adjust where the door closes. A typical kit, drawn from VDI's Crossfire manual: the plate, arm, brackets, shock and angles differ by vehicle, and each kit is made for its car.
