The 2002-2005 Ford Explorer is a big, boxy SUV, and vertical doors change how it opens completely. Instead of swinging outward, each door pivots up and forward on a Vertical Doors, Inc. hinge, which turns heads at a show and helps in tight spots where a full-size Explorer door has no room to swing. This kit, part number VDCFEXP0205, fits every trim of the Explorer from 2002 through 2005.

The hinges bolt directly to the factory bolt pattern, and the conversion is completely reversible if you ever want the stock door swing back. Every kit is made in the USA from domestic hardened steel and is patented here as well. An instruction manual ships in the box, and we recommend having a professional installer work through it so the doors line up right the first time. One thing to know before you order: truck and SUV kits are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, so double-check your year and model.

The door first swings out on the vertical pin, then lifts on the round bearing hub, and the gas shock holds it up: the two-stage motion in VDI's patent (US 6,845,547). Each kit has right and left hinge assemblies, two gas shocks, M8 bolts with washers, shoulder bolts and pins (VDI install manuals); set screw #2 and nut #1 adjust where the door closes. A typical kit, drawn from VDI's Crossfire manual: the plate, arm, brackets, shock and angles differ by vehicle, and each kit is made for its car.
